Trouser hems & break
Training content
Identify the intended trouser break and confirm the recorded hem finish before altering.

The finished result
Both legs follow their recorded measurements, with the intended break and approved hem finish.
Applicable brand specifications
Brand specification requiredNo official Levi’s specification has been supplied for this lesson. Confirm exact measurements, tolerances, approved techniques and finishing requirements in the garment’s recorded instructions or with the store before proceeding.
Tools and materials
- Fitting instructions
- Tape measure
- Pins and removable chalk
- Relevant footwear for an authorized fitting
Before you begin
- Read the fitting instructions for each leg and the requested break.
- Inspect the original hem, allowance and fabric.
- Confirm any original-hem or turn-up requirement.
Method
Compare the silhouette
Review the intended hem line against the recorded fitting.
No break, slight break and fuller break describe different silhouettes, not universal length specifications.

Confirm the finish
Identify the approved hem style and measurement reference.
Brand specification required. Do not substitute a regular hem for a requested original finish without approval.
Alter and inspect
Follow the approved procedure and compare each leg with its record.
Check the hang and hem line without stretching or twisting the fabric.

Common issues and when to ask for help
- The intended break or footwear context is unclear.
- Available allowance does not support the requested finish.
Final quality checklist
Put it into practice
